Since last Saturday was the day before Easter of course we had to dye some eggs! This was my first time doing it in literally decades but I think ours turned out alright.

Got to get all the supplies ready beforehand.

Do you see that absolutely adorable apron Gabby is wearing? I had matching aprons made for us to wear from a friend. She has an etsy store so if you’re looking for something cute check her out here!

I love the age my daughter Gabrielle is now. At two years old she’s full of personality and you can almost watch the wheels turn in her head as she’s learning something. Every day I wonder where did she learn that from? There are a few things she definitely inherited from me. She loves to dance, sing and is strong willed stubborn, persistent yeah that’s the word. She’ll even tilt her head just so when you’re taking her picture if you ask her to show you her “pretty face”.

For reference, here’s me:

and here is hers:
Children Photographer in Kansas City

I swear I didn’t teach her to do that. I would tell her I was sweeping her hair out of her face because I wanted to see how pretty she was and then she started tilting her head and doing this. Well despite those characteristics there are many more that undoubtedly were inherited from her daddy. My daughter looks just like my husband down to every minuscule detail. Long ago I gave up on her having any resemblance of me. I’m fine with that because honestly he did a make a pretty cute girl. For those that don’t know what he looks like picture her but chop off the hair, put it on a grown man and well that’s my husband. Incredibly long and thick eyelashes that makes you think it’s a waste because every morning I try to enhance mine to look like that and to no avail.

One thing she recently started doing was this one particular look. I can assure you she didn’t learn it from me. I would show you one of the 181 reference images I have on my hard drive of my husband giving this exact same ‘look’ because he doesn’t want his picture taken (and yes I know exactly how many images I have with every person I know in them because I’m OCD about tagging them the second they get copied off the memory card but I digress). However, I’m a busy girl and I don’t have time to shop for a new baby daddy, especially one that puts the seat down EVERY SINGLE TIME. Forget about flowers, once you find a guy that will take out the trash unprompted and automatically puts the seat down you need to snag him up and FAST. Throw in a man that cleans up after himself and you’ve met my Prince Charming. :)

Anyway here’s the “Look”:

As you can tell I’m sure I’ve NEVER ever given anyone this look unless the seat was left up….

10 Questions
About the image…

1. Why do you love this image?

I love all kinds of images but I am particularly drawn to the “light, airy” images…especially with newborns. I love how the image is light with just a splash of color thrown in. It screams delicate to me.

2. What were your settings with this image?
ISO 400, F/3.2, ss 1/250 using natural light and my Nikon d300

About Photography…
3.What do you love about Photography?

I love doing Newborn Photography. There’s just something about those perfect little bodies and cute facial expressions. The newborn period flys by so quickly that many parents miss it due to lack of sleep and the fogginess of those first few weeks. By the time the images are ready for parents their newborn has already changed and grown.

4. What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
I love doing Newborn Photography. There’s just something about those perfect little bodies and cute facial expressions. By the time the images are ready for parents their newborn has already changed and grown.

About your life…
5. I’ve been the “photographer” in the family for as long as I can remember. I remember taking my 110 film to the drugstore and being so excited when it was time to pick it up. I’ve loved photography since I was at least 10 years old! I also really like reading, listening to music and playing volleyball. What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?

6.Who or what inspires you?
I love just looking at photographs of any kind. National Geographic is one of my favorite magazines because of the images. I’m very inspired by other photographers and the images they capture also. I find myself at times talking to my daughters and seeing the wonderful light captured in their eyes. I’ve been known to grab my camera in conversation and take pictures

7.A good portrait means ….
One in which people feel an emotion when looking at it. I love to photograph babies and I love it even more when mothers see the image and get teary eyed. I remember what I wanted to capture when my girls were babies and I’m happy to create that same type of capture for others.

8.Do you have a dream to photograph one specific person? Who would it be and why?
Not necessarily a dream but I think it would be so fun to be a celebrity newborn photographer. Where do I apply for a job like that? lol

9.What would your ideal day be like?
My ideal day would be a sunny, warm (low 80′s) light breeze one. I love summer vacation when my girls aren’t in school and we can laze through the day. I love the smell of fresh cut grass and blooming flowers. I would love to just sit in my backyard and read a good book and hear my children playing with their friends in the area.

10.If you weren’t a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
I am currently a nurse. I’ve been working with newborns in L&D or postpartum for the past 13 years. I get my baby fix through both my photography and my daily job. I couldn’t ask for a better life!

10 Questions
About the image…

1. Why do you love this image?

I was hired by this young man’s father to fly to Philadelphia and photograph this senior. It was an amazing experience that was capped off by visiting George Washington’s chapel at Valley Forge where this photo was taken. The lighting was beautiful when we visited there and the image merges two of my favorite things: high school seniors and architecture. This spot will always hold a special place in my heart.

2. What were your settings with this image?
ISO 400
f2.8
1/200
70-200mm at 75mm

About Photography…
3.What do you love about Photography?

I love to show people, but especially teenage girls, that they are beautiful just the way that they are. It is an incredible feeling to be able to take a photograph, show them the back of the camera and watch as their self esteem and countenance change.

4. What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
I love photographing children and capturing the way that they see the world.
I love photographing families and documenting the way that they interact.
I love photographing engagements….most grooms to be will do anything that I ask because they love their future wife so much and want to please her.
I love photographing weddings. I feel it is a privilege to document such a monumental day.
BUT I LOVE SENIORS THE MOST. The world is at their fingertips and they are celebrating all that they have achieved. It is a priceless experience to walk with them.

About your life…
5. What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?

Well – the list is long. I crochet, paint, sew, have taught flower arranging and cake decorating, and am an interior designer. I love to cook, and read, and I love, love, love to travel.

6.Who or what inspires you?
I am so incredibly blessed to be able to associate with some of the most talented and creative photographers on the planet. You would think that there would be hard feelings amongst such a tight knit, competitive crowd, but they are giving, encouraging, and unselfish.
I am also inspired by my talented children who are always game to try new things and to develop their talents. They are my joy in the world.

7.Who are some of your favorite singers/bands?
I grew up in the 80′s and love all things from that era. I love dance/hip hop music but also enjoy Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, and Michael Buble. So a pretty wide spectrum.

8.What is your favorite movie of all time?
Probably the last one that I watched.

9.What would your ideal day be like?
Wake up 7:00 am, have breakfast with my family, and head out for a wildly fun senior session. Lunch with my hunny, take a little nap, work in photoshop for a few hours, dinner at Texas Roadhouse, and then shoot a fabulous couple’s engagement session.
OR
spend the day at the beach south of Playa del Carmen with my family. Both would work.

10.If you weren’t a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
In my past life, I was an Interior Designer. I have substitute taught (teachers do NOT get paid enough), and I also helped my sister start her fabulous home decor store. Any of those things would still be great to do, but photography is my PASSION!

As a photographer and a mom I ofcourse take a lot of pictures of my children. However I usually get so occupied with the day to day activities that those images rarely are edited and if I do then I almost never share them. As a result one thing I’m focusing on doing more is just taking ‘snaps’ of my own kids and making sure to share them. My way of tackling that challenge is “Family Fridays”. While I don’t promise to share some every Friday I do anticipate that I’ll be sharing a lot more than I previously did. Children grow up so fast and it’s so important to just document them playing with their latest (insert newest toy here).

In today’s case it’s a vet kit that my wonderful sister in law sent Gabrielle for her birthday. Well Gabby absolutely loves that kit, fortunately it all came in a handy doggy crate that I can shove it all in after she’s tired of it – usually 7 minutes later. Keep in mind 7 minutes for a toddler equals approximately 3 hours for an adult. The only thing that tops that is play-dough at a record breaking 11 minutes.

That poor doggy has had his ‘tempture’ taken more times than I can count now. Oh and he’s lucky he hasn’t overdosed from all the ‘medsin’ he’s been given now. Poor dog’s only saving grace is the monkey has recently gotten sick as well…

I recently got a remote for my camera and it’s nice to actually be in few images with my little ones.

10 Questions
About the image…

1. Why do you love this image?

First because that’s my baby <3 and I love her little smile, and her stranglehold on the stuffed dog that goes everywhere with us. I love it also because of the hayfield setting, the textured processing, and most of all the gorgeous golden backlighting. Oh, how I love shooting in the sun! If I could shoot EVERY session backlit at sunset, I'd be overjoyed.

2. What were your settings with this image?
I shot this on my old camera – the Nikon D90 with the 35mm 1.8 lens. ISO 200, f/1.8 and ss 1/1600.

About Photography…
3.What do you love about Photography?

I love the creative outlet Photography offers me; the process of imagining a concept, sculpting my vision into reality, then capturing the moment through the lens and editing it to perfection. I also love the challenge of it; there are so many elements of a great image that I am constantly striving to learn more and be better. It’s the most fulfilling career I’ve ever had, not just because it is challenging and creative, but also because it allows me to meet wonderful families and people, and preserve their precious and fleeting moments for them to cherish forever.

4. What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
I focus mostly on seniors and families. I adore working with seniors – they have so much energy and personality and style; it’s contagious! And I love the dynamics and emotions and playfulness of family sessions. I love that a family often shows up expecting their portrait session to be like another chore on their to-do list, only to find that they actually have a blast together doing it! And it’s so rewarding when they see their images and tell me with a big smile that I really captured who they are together! I have very few images of my own family together from my childhood, but I treasure them. I think EVERY family deserves a photographic reminder of the love they share….
I shoot a lot of kids and babies too, and since I love kids and babies anyway, those shoots are most enjoyable! Kids have such a range of expressions and moods, even in a 20 minute period, and I love preserving that for their parents to cherish later. I love capturing all the little details of childhood – hands, feet, eyelashes – because they change so quickly when they’re young, and without a photo it’s difficult to recall exactly how they looked at a particular moment, right down to the fingernails.

About your life…
5. What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?

Besides photography, I love to read. I read a novel a day. It’s an addiction. Like chocolate. Or Angry Birds :)

6.Who or what inspires you?
I’m very inspired by other photographers. There is such incredible talent out there, and also generosity and hard work. I’m inspired by gorgeous light – that hour before sunset on a summer day especially. I find nature very inspiring – moonlight on a river or fog on an open field at dawn always inspire me to pick up my camera…

7.Who are some of your favorite singers/bands?
Right now I am reallly loving One Republic. Can’t get enough of them. But I’m a big fan of the cheesy classics too – like New Kids on the Block, lol.

8.What is your favorite movie of all time?
That’s tough. There’s no way I can pick just one. Off the top of my head, I’d say some of my faves are the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Shakespeare in Love, and Shawshank Redemption.

9.What would your ideal day be like?
Sunny!!! Living in Seattle, I’ve got a mad craving for sunshine – we don’t get enough of it!!! The perfect day would be warm and bright, spent exploring the beach with my husband and kids, and my camera of course!

10.If you weren’t a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
Before I was a photographer, I was a teacher. If I couldn’t take pictures, I’d like to work with kids again in some capacity. Or maybe I’d be a florist. Or a travel writer.

Be sure to leave some comments telling Cari what you like about her work and don’t forget to check her out here
